OTHER ARTIST'S VOICES
For the first year and a half, Dan's show was strictly Neil Diamond, and everything was going well. But Dan often wondered if people would tire of his show. He talked about adding Elvis Presley and John Denver to his act to keep the audience interested. While rehearsing those voices, he discovered other artists, like Gordon Lightfoot, Billy Joel, and Elton John, and the list kept growing. Dan could tell what the audience liked by the applause each artist received, and soon the list grew so big it became difficult to manage. Software tools helped in putting new shows together, so Dan just kept adding more artists. A few years later, he added 160 "Golden Generation Songs," with artists like Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Dean Martin, and the like.
Today, Dan feels like he can satisfy the taste of nearly any audience, as he has generations of listeners covered. And while Neil Diamond is hands down Dan's favorite artist, the broad spectrum of other artists has made performing even more enjoyable for him. Every show is different, and Dan chooses every song based on the audience he will be performing for. He says it adds a few extra hours of prep time to his routine each week, but feels it's worth every second of his time. And he feels just as good when someone tells him he sounds just like Gordon Lightfoot, as he does when they say the same about Neil Diamond. And when people request songs, Dan usually has them covered. In fact, Dan has performed shows that consisted of requests only.
Dan admits he can't sound exactly like every artist, so some just sound similar to the original, but he's happy with the dozens he does so well. He says, "Being a vocal impressionist isn't easy, but it's the most challenging and fulfilling thing I've ever done."
